Where to Stay: Sydney’s WakeUp!

I can honestly not say enough fabulous things about this hostel.  In my 4 month’s down under I stayed in this amazing hostel for a whopping 25 nights!  My length of stay isn’t even considered to be the longest.  I met people there that had stayed for months at a time and truly made the WakeUp Sydney their home.  This modern hostel is full of great amenities that most backpackers tend to think of it as a luxury hostel.

Just steps from Central Station, and in the heart of Chinatown, WakeUp Sydney is close enough to everything and anything any traveller could ever want!  Upon walking into the lobby, backpackers are welcomed by the wonderful and friendly WakeUp Sydney staff at the 24hr front desk.  Check-in is made quick and painless and guests are given a swipe card on a lanyard that provides them access to the building (at night), their room and is used when selecting their floor on the elevator.  The modern lobby with a large double-sided circular couch and large flat screen television is in the middle of the open floor plan.  To the left of the couch and television are a number of computers complete with internet access available for a small charge.

Also in this space is the amazing TravelUp! desk.  If you need ANYTHING – from a car rental to flight to tour package, go see their wonderful knowledgeable staff.  Ali helped me with many of my travel plans and she was beyond amazing.  I think we spent four hours one rainy day working out what I was to do for the following two months of travel.  Upon my arrival back in Sydney, Ali was one of the first people I went to visit and we spent a good hour or so looking at pictures and talking about the tours she had recommended that I go on.

With prices ranging from $28*/night for a ten-share to $98/night for a twin room, WakeUp Sydney is fairly affordable for most travelers.  Their large dorm rooms are equipped with lockers (bring your own lock), comfortable bunks, and large windows that let in lots of light.  There is even a cleaning crew that comes in once a week to vacuum and do a thorough clean of the room.

The designer bathrooms are spacious and kept sparkling clean.  There are four showers, four toilets and four sinks per bathroom with plenty of mirror space for even the flashiest of backpackers.

Guests are free to use the large twelve hub industrial kitchen, which is visited by cleaning crews four times per day!  Just off of the kitchen, on the 1st floor, is the TV lounge area.  It is a spacious and relaxed social area to unwind and connect up with some likeminded travellers.

Other features of this hostel include the SideBar – the basement bar that not only serves delicious food (and its CHEAP too!) but hosts some of the best backpacker parties in the city.  There are no school nights for travellers, and SideBar is sure to offer a wide range of entertainment to both WakeUp! guests and non-guests alike.   One word of warning though, if your bedroom is on the first or second floor, you will unfortunately hear the music at all hours of the night through the floor.  If this bothers you, you should ask upon check-in for a room on one of the higher floors.  I stayed on the fourth floor and the bar noise was barely audible.

The WakeUp Café is an amazing little breakfast stop that serves delicious coffee and equally wonderful food – great for those short stay guests who don’t want to buy groceries.  There are 24hr web and wireless services available for a small fee, laundry facilities on every floor, job posting boards and pretty much everything that a backpacker could ever want or need in a hostel.  A few times per week they also have day trip walks around the city and beach walks.  It’s a great way for those new to the city to see all the sights.

It’s truly no wonder why I felt so completely at ease at this hostel – it soon became like a home away from home for me, and leaving when my travels were over proved to be very difficult for me.  The friendly staff and amazing amenities make this hostel one of the best Sydney has to offer – not to mention they’ve won countless awards and has been rated the world’s number one independent backpackers.  Be sure that if Sydney’s in your travel plans, you check out WakeUp Sydney!  You won’t be disappointed.
