The Next Big Adventure

Hello blog friends!  Long time no see!  The second half of 2017 and beginning of 2018 has been a whirlwind, full of both big and little adventures.

Kris and I finished up our dog training classes; I went to New York with my friend Samantha for a week; I worked most weekends between May and November assisting and second shooting with a wedding photographer; we hosted Kris’s friend, Matt from London, for two weeks in July, followed immediately by hosting my bestie, Kate from New Zealand for two weeks; we got up to the cottage as much as we could; Kris changed jobs and I’ve been growing my photography business.  I even sold my condo in November, and we have finally merged our “stuff” in our townhouse, and it finally looks like less of a bachelor pad and more of a grown-up house that has a woman living in it.  Life hasn’t been travel-filled these days, rather it’s been a lot of ordinary everyday life things, really.

However, one non-ordinary everyday life thing has occurred!  I guess this is the appropriate time to announce that on November 12 – after almost 5 years of being together – Kris got down on one knee and (with the help of our rescue dog, Loki) he finally proposed to me!

We’re engaged!!!

We’re both so excited for this next big adventure together.

For those of you who’ve stuck around through the quiet times of The Mellyboo Project, you may remember that I met Kris while on vacation with my mom and sister back in February 2013.  I had just moved back from spending nearly 2 years abroad living in Australia, and then New Zealand, and I had travel plans to head back to Africa for my 2nd stint blogging for Nomad Adventure Tours.  I had no intention or desire to stay in Canada.

Then I met Kris and suddenly life, as I had known it, was different.

When I went to Africa in the summer of 2013, I experienced homesickness for the very first time.  I knew (as Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeroes sang it) home was wherever I was with (Kris).  And so my long-term travels ceased and I started making my life here in Canada!

Life with Kris hasn’t been travel-less though.  Together we’ve been to:
  • Ottawa
  • a road trip from London, Ontario to Chicago
  • a California coastal road trip + Joshua Tree National Park
  • Jamaica
  • Las Vegas
  • Cannes
  • Monaco
  • Amsterdam
  • London, UK
  • Paris, France
  • Istanbul
  • Jordan

After months – maybe even years – of not so subtly ‘dropping hints’ that we should get married, he finally proposed!  It was very simple – exactly what I wanted.  After a girls weekend with my friend Samantha, we came home to Kris cooking a delicious lamb curry and when I walked into the kitchen he was down on one knee (with Loki – decked out in a bow tie – sitting like a good boy next to Kris).  A light-up marquee sign that had the words “Will U Marry My Dad” sat on the kitchen counter behind them.  And the most beautiful ring was put on my finger as Kris asked me to marry him!

Of course, I said yes!

I may have also said, “fucking finally!!!!”  (in true Melissa form).

So for now… Kris and I are neck deep in wedding planning mode!  Without giving away too many details – we’ll be having a beautiful fall wedding close in a beautiful area of Ontario – not too far from our home.  We’re so lucky that our friends and family from all over the world plan on being with us on our special day.  The venue is booked, photographer booked, the dress is ordered, and our honeymoon flights have been purchased… and it’s all been surprisingly less stressful than expected.  We’re so excited for everything that our next big adventure has in store!
