About Melissa & The Mellyboo Project
Hi! Welcome to my humble online abode, The Mellyboo Project. I’m Melissa, a Canadian world wanderer, dream-chaser, thrill-seeker, lifestyle & travel photographer, and storyteller. I do all this in hopes that I may in some way inspire others to live their own dreams, step out of their comfort zone, see the world and live an extraordinary life on their own terms.
Since I was young I’ve always used storytelling and writing as a creative outlet. As I grew older my creative pursuits turned from words to photographs and eventually to film. Storytelling became so much a part of who I was that I graduated university with a Bachelors degree in Film with hopes of creating beautiful and inspiring films that would entertain and educate the masses. In the last few years, I stepped away from my filmmaking aspirations and returned to the written word.
The earliest incarnation of The Mellyboo Project, back in 2010, was a means for me to share my travel experiences with friends and family back home while I was off exploring the globe. Before I knew it, my little blog had manifested into a source of inspiration for independent-minded travellers (and wannabe travellers) all over the world.
Travel has always been a big part of my life and I continue to have an insatiable desire to go out and explore the world around me. My life of travel started out with family trips to Disney World, progressed to vacations at all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, and then eventually to solo-travel backpacking adventures everywhere from Australia to Africa and many places in between.
Since taking off on my own around the globe, I’ve had the opportunity to live and work abroad on working holidays in both New Zealand and Australia, I’ve volunteered hands-on at a lion conservation project in Zimbabwe (a cause that is very dear in my heart), and have had the opportunity to connect with like-minded travelers, as well as locals from destinations all over the world. I cherish the time I spend getting to learn about new cultures and connecting with people and simply experiencing new and exciting things.
Adventure has played a big role in my travels. I’ve bungee jumped, skydived, and walked with lions. I’m constantly stepping out of my comfort zone – whether it’s doing an adventurous activity or having a new and strange culinary experience (like eating jellyfish in Hong Kong, kangaroo in Australia or various types of antelope in Namibia). While my parents tend to cringe at the idea of me scuba diving with sharks, it has become such a huge part of who I am that it’s not me just merely ticking items off of my bucket list – it’s become just another way of living my life to the fullest.
What’s with the name?
Mellyboo? It was a nickname given to me years back. It’s silly but memorable – exactly what I hope to be.
What is The Mellyboo Project?
The Mellyboo Project is my personal mission to listen to my heart more, push myself to courageously set my own terms of how my life should be, and ultimately to remind me to follow my dreams. I’m determined to live a life on my own terms, not one dictated by societal norms. I’m chasing my dreams, travelling the world and getting to share my experiences with anyone willing to listen (or read).
There are numerous ways we can continue the conversation beyond this website. Feel free to like, follow, share and drop me a line – I love feedback and answering your questions.
